What is a Class Code?

Workers' comp class codes are 4-digit numbers assigned by NCCI that categorize employees by job type. Your insurer uses these codes to calculate your premium — each code carries its own base rate reflecting the risk level of that occupation.

How Premiums Are Calculated

Your premium = (Total payroll ÷ 100) × class code rate × experience modifier. The class code rate shown here is a baseline — your state, insurer, and claims history all affect the final number.

NCCI vs. State-Specific Codes

Most states use NCCI codes. However, California, New York, New Jersey, Texas, and a few others use their own independent rating bureaus with different code sets. Always verify with your state's workers' comp authority.

Misclassification Risks

Using the wrong class code — intentionally or by mistake — can result in significant premium adjustments at audit, fines, or policy cancellation. When in doubt, ask your insurer or a licensed agent to verify the correct code.
